How to tell if AI can even find your business
Before you invest in AI visibility, you should know where you actually stand. Here's a simple set of checks you can run yourself, in an afternoon, to see whether the major AI platforms recognize your business at all.
To check whether AI can find your business, ask each major platform (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews) directly about your business by name, then ask for recommendations in your category without naming yourself. If the AI can't describe you accurately, or never surfaces you for category questions you should win, you have an entity or authority gap. These self-checks reveal the problem, though not always the cause.
Why do this first
People often jump straight to fixing AI visibility without knowing whether they have a problem, or what kind. A few minutes of structured checking saves you from guessing. You don't need tools for the basics — you need to ask the right questions and read the answers honestly.
Check 1: Does the AI know who you are?
Go to ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google (look for the AI Overview), and ask each one directly: "What can you tell me about [your business name]?"
Read the answer critically:
- Accurate and confident? Good — your entity signals are working.
- Vague, hedged, or "I don't have information"? You have an entity recognition gap. The AI doesn't clearly know you exist.
- Confidently wrong? Worse than silence — your signals are contradictory, and the AI is guessing.
Check 2: Do you show up when you're not named?
This is the real test. Ask each platform a category question a customer would ask, without naming yourself: "Who are the best [your service] providers in [your area]?" or "What should I look for when hiring a [your service]?"
If competitors appear and you don't — for questions you should genuinely be a strong answer to — that's your visibility gap in the clear. Ranking on Google for these terms but being absent here is the classic "rank but not recommended" pattern.
Do this across all five surfaces
Don't stop at one platform. Check Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, the AI-powered Map Pack (for local), ChatGPT, and Perplexity. They behave differently, and you might be visible on one and invisible on another. The full picture is what matters.
"The question isn't whether you rank. It's whether, when a customer asks the AI and never types your name, you're in the answer at all."
Check 3: Can the AI find a clean answer on your site?
Pick a key question your business should own. Now look at the page that should answer it. Is the answer stated plainly, near the top, in a way you could copy in one clean sentence? Or is it buried under introductions and marketing copy? If you can't extract it easily, neither can an AI.
These checks show you the symptom, not always the cause. Silence usually means an entity gap; absence from category answers usually means an authority or extractability gap. Knowing which you have is the start of fixing it.
What the results tell you
- AI can't describe you → entity clarity problem. Start with structured data and consistent signals.
- AI describes you but never recommends you → authority or extractability problem. Your content isn't giving the AI a reason or a clean way to cite you.
- AI gets you wrong → contradictory signals. Audit for inconsistency across your site and listings.
If you want the version of this that goes beyond self-checks — measured, scored across all five platforms, with the actual cause diagnosed — that's exactly what an AI Visibility Score is for.

Let's talk about itThe bottom line
You can't fix what you haven't measured. Twenty minutes of honest checking tells you whether AI even knows you exist — and that's the first thing worth knowing before you spend anything trying to improve it.
