What is Agent-Ready SEO? The framework, explained simply

For twenty years we optimized for two audiences: the person and the search engine. There's now a third — the AI agent that reads your site and decides whether to vouch for you. Agent-Ready SEO is my framework for making a business legible to that reader.

The short answer

Agent-Ready SEO is a framework for making a business legible to AI systems as well as to search engines. It treats a website as something an AI agent has to understand, extract, and trust — not just something a person clicks. It rests on four signals: entity clarity, extractable answers, demonstrated authority, and technical trust. It's not a new discipline; it's SEO fundamentals aimed at a new kind of reader.

The idea behind the name

We used to have two readers. The human, who needs your page to be useful and persuasive. And the search engine crawler, which needs it to be structured and relevant. We got good at serving both.

Now there's a third reader: the AI agent. When someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity a question, an AI reads the available sources, decides which ones it understands and trusts, and hands back an answer built from them. If your site isn't built for that reader, you're invisible in the answer — no matter how well you serve the other two.

Agent-Ready SEO is what I call building deliberately for that third reader. And here's the part the acronym-sellers won't tell you: it's not a new discipline. It's the same SEO fundamentals, aimed at a reader that grades them more strictly.

The four signals

Making a business agent-ready comes down to four things. Each maps to something SEO already cared about — just sharpened for AI.

1. Entity clarity — can the AI tell who you are?

AI systems think in entities: people, companies, places. Before an AI can recommend you, it has to recognize you as a real, distinct thing. That means structured data, consistent naming, and signals that line up across your site and the wider web. Get this wrong and you're a blur the AI won't risk citing.

2. Extractable answers — can the AI lift a clean answer from your page?

An AI needs to pull a clear, correct statement out of your content. If your answers are buried under build-up, or vague enough that lifting them risks getting it wrong, the AI moves on to a source it can quote confidently. Answer-first structure isn't a style choice here — it's the difference between being usable and being skipped.

3. Demonstrated authority — does the AI have reason to trust you?

Repeating your claim is a form of endorsement, and AI systems are careful about it. They favor sources that show real authority: depth on the topic, evidence over adjectives, a track record they can verify. Thin content that ranked on optimization tricks doesn't clear this bar.

4. Technical trust — can the AI retrieve you cleanly?

None of the above matters if the machine can't access you. Crawlability, speed, clean structure — the plumbing that makes you retrievable in the first place. This is the floor everything else stands on.

"Agent-Ready SEO isn't about tricking the AI. It's about removing every reason for it to overlook, misread, or distrust you — which is exactly what good SEO always tried to do."

Why it's a framework, not a checklist

I come at search from computer science, so I see this as a system, not a list of tasks. The four signals reinforce each other: entity clarity makes your authority attributable; extractable answers give your authority somewhere to live; technical trust makes all of it retrievable. Fix one in isolation and you get a fraction of the benefit. Treat them as a system and they compound.

The takeaway

Agent-Ready SEO = entity clarity + extractable answers + demonstrated authority + technical trust. Build for the reader that isn't human, and you build the same foundation that wins in traditional search too.

How to start

Begin with a diagnosis, not a to-do list. Find out which of the four signals is actually holding you back — for most businesses it's entity clarity or extractability, not authority. That's the logic behind my whole approach, and I measure progress with an AI Visibility Score across all five platforms so improvement is something you can see.

The bottom line

You don't need a new specialty to win in AI search. You need to build for the new reader — deliberately, systematically, on the same foundations you already know. That's Agent-Ready SEO.
